  1. Nope. That company just went bust and closed up shop. The bottom fell out of the lithium market making sodium non-competitive.

  2. Nah. Sodium is simply not as energy dense.

    Source – I manufacture standardized battery modules with both sodium and lithium cells. Our lithium module is 4.2kwh but our sodium is just under 2kwh, both using the highest capacity cells on the market

    Sodium is fantastic for low temps / high temps and cycle life. But not range

  3. YouTube host Matt Ferrell produced an excellent video about CATL’s work on sodium-based batteries that lays out the pros, cons, and important details that CATL has not disclosed. The promise appears to be there. But as Ferrell clearly pointed out, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns yet. I find Ferrell’s videos are more thoroughly researched than those of The Electric Viking.

    [Here is the link to Ferrell’s video, “How CATL made batteries 90% cheaper.”](https://youtu.be/Wf84NJSiAeU?si=uqgibu-sE7kVIMzI) It’s 15 minutes well spent.

  4. Lithium ion capacity loss with temperature.

    Cold temperature losses:

    * 25°C (77°F) = 100%
    * 0°C (32°F) = ~92%
    * –10°C (14°F) = ~85%
    * –20°C (4°F) = ~80%

    That’s just capacity loss, that does not include active heating of the 500kg battery pack. Minus 20c is common in many places.

  5. Battery swapping stations is an extremely stupid idea. So you pull out of the car lot with your brand spanking new EV and you need a charge. So what do you do? You head to the swap station where your brand new battery is swapped with a 5 year old battery. Now your brand new car has a 5 year old battery. Since you won’t be swapping all that often, for the next 6 months you are able to charge at home each day, but you are charging a 5 year old battery. Maybe you take a road trip and need the swapping services again. Maybe you get a 2 year old battery, or maybe another 5 or 6 year old battery.

    This is incredibly dumb. Unless the car is priced without a battery and you swap every time, it is just a bad deal.
