“People are often mystified by why beautifully restored areas in eastern Germany, Poland, Hungary and much of central and eastern Europe, which have comparatively low immigration rates, have turned to populism. A big piece of the puzzle is depopulation.”
I live in this new reality of Poland.
Everything is excellent, economy, infrastructure, housing, services..
..it’s not because of scary immigrants/lack-of though, just hard graft of the Polish work ethic, and a MASSIVE bit of luck with EU funding (Polish people do not like to accept this bit out loud, Poland did GREAT from EU funding, my apartment had a massive chunk of EU money to fix it up, and I’m grateful.
The easily misled, and simple Poles, blame it on migration nonsense, just like the uneducated/racist lot in the UK who lap up the Telegraph.
“city dwelling liberals” 😂
Guben, this is a particularly pertinent question, since the town straddles the German-Polish border with the Neisse River separating German Guben from Polish Gubin since 1945. That border – a bridge at the end of the high street – is now subject to police controls since the new German government has adopted a stricter stance on immigration.
Doesn’t give a fuck what people think, fear, or want == mainstream, serious politicians.
Articulate people’s fears, take them seriously == dangerous far-right populists.
Many such cases.
Yeah, I DEFINITELY need to know the opinion of an extremely biased news source from a completely different country on why stuff is happening in MY COUNTRY….
“they need to start discussing demography in a way that goes beyond insisting on immigration as the only solution”
You are elected as government representative and need to solve government problems. One of the problem that you need to sustain grows. For sustainable grows you need new workers, but your citizens refuse to reproduce. And then angry citizens are not happy with your work, from one side they do not reproduce, from another, they are not happy with immigrants.
Are there any other ways to add new people to the country? Maybe article authors meant necromancy? Or cloning? Because i don’t really understand what are other solutions exists to improve demographics.
As a citizen of Zgorzelec and frequent visitor in Gubin due to my work – except of higher traffic (and jams) due to border controls that scares off some of Germans that used to do shopping in Castorama or Carrefour literally nothing has changed in here. So this bullshit excuse of a newspaper can shove it.
Ummm… that’s not exactly what the headline, sub-hed, or article seems to be getting at or emphasizing.
> uncontrollable populist forces
This basically means “people don’t vote the way I’d prefer”
I don’t really think it’s worth reading when it starts so hard on the emotional manipulation/propaganda.
