The Duke of Sussex arrived in Nottingham 45 minutes late, a delay blamed on traffic thought to have been caused by the Tube strike.

Prince Harry returned to the UK via the VIP Windsor suite at Heathrow on Monday, his first visit to the country after losing his long-running battle with the Home Office in which he sought to have his police security reinstated.

As a result, Harry no longer has access to police convoys to usher him through traffic, a privilege afforded to working members of the royal family on official engagements.

Harry has said that while he feels unable to bring his children back to the UK safely he would like to be “reconciled” with his family. Paying tribute to his late grandmother on Monday, he laid a wreath and flowers at her tomb in St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

He also presented the WellChild awards at a ceremony in central London. Harry’s team and Buckingham Palace have refused to confirm if the King will meet his younger son.

When he arrived to visit a community radio station in the St Ann’s area of Nottingham, a crowd of about 100 people, including a group of young children, had gathered to cheer his arrival. One well-wisher shouted: “Harry, you brought the sunshine with you.”

He is due to give a speech this afternoon in which he is expected to announce a substantial personal donation to BBC Children in Need and the charity’s projects to tackle the effects of violence on young people.

Among those waiting outside to see the duke was Margaret Wilson, 66, who wore a T-shirt with a slogan that read: “Team Harry. Lifetime Member. Man. Myth. Legend”.

Wilson said she had been hoping to catch a “glimpse” of Harry and added: “I’ve followed him for a long time. I was a fan of his mother and I like what he’s doing. He’s doing a lot for charity and he’s not even on the payroll. He doesn’t have to do this; he’s choosing to do this.”
