NIMBY’s objecting to 146 Apts. to “save” a pub feck all people went to

  1. You’re right OP, the place was always pretty empty. However, the big attraction of the place is the massive car park behind it (where the apartments would be built) and a lot of people think that the road there would be too busy and backed up with the extra cars from the apartments too.

Personally I drive past this pub every day and it’s been closed a few years now, time to do something with it and nothing better than apartments

  2. “The development is mostly 1-bed apartments (69/146). This would seem to target single commuters to the city rather than families or even couples, who, now more than ever require a second bedroom to use as an office.”

Reaching a bit there, also let’s say it was just single people instead of couples in the apartments, wouldn’t that mean there would be less traffic?

  3. No wish to save the empty pub that’s boarded up but ~150 apartments with parking spaces for only half that is not ideal. There would also need to be improvements to the access road to get in and out.

  4. Can we not make Cork or Limerick more attractive. So that we dont wake up one day with 95% of the population concentrated in Dublin.

I left my side gate open overnight and they built a lidl there.

  5. The only thing ill say is there should be 1 parking spot for each bedroom built and an extra 10 per block for visitors but aside from that it looks nice, the location is great and its thoroughly needed right now. We need to build more housing, this is just asinine to object

  6. > The development is **mostly** 1-bed apartments (**69/146**)

Apparently NIMBYs are only good at math when it comes to calculating the value of their own houses.

Also, I love how one of their objections is that it’s too *beige* and therefore wouldn’t fit into the [unique beauty of Swords](https://goo.gl/maps/drCPMaYo8hKZYJRA8)…

  7. Problem is that the traffic is already fucked as it is. That junction from forest road is blocked most of the time. Also there is shit public transport into town.

  8. Do you people seriously have no problem with destroying beautiful old buildings? Have you no pride for Irish architectural and cultural history? By all means build apartments and replace inefficient modern buildings or whatever, but come on. Beautiful old buildings have already been largely wiped out and replaced with soulless concrete and glass blocks, we need to preserve what we have left in this world.

  9. The immediate infrastructure around there is nowhere near ready for 146 apartments.

I’m all for places for people to live but 146 apartments at the top of Swords main street is not the right place.

  10. The guy who inherited this building has a bunch of empty land across the road, in front of his own family house. They’ve left it that way for decades. Would they not propose some apartments there?

  11. 3 points they had made out had me laughing

    * Destruction of a landmark- yeah right its a run down pub in Swords, cry me a fucking river.
    * Protecting views and heritage- oh yeah the views into the Ward River Valley Park and St. Columba’s Church and Round Tower are really something. Shame the local residents can’t afford to fucking live there.
    * Aesthetic Treatment- oh give me a fucking break. Swords being classed as a heritage town is just a barrel of laughs. Its a commuter area to Dublin 2.

  12. Fair point about the traffic being horrendous in that area, but maybe a new development would change the road layout and make it better. It certainly can’t make it any worse

  13. Why are you never happy cheer up for the love of god cheer up , Beautiful Sunday take a walk in the park or on the beach it can change your attitude

  14. At this stage does anyone want houses/apartments built in their area?
Never met such gobshites, one minute complaining no houses, next complaining because houses are been built in their area

  15. The thing is their reaction on a personal level is justified but alas we live in a society and part of that is living alongside others. So many people forget this, they forget about all the provisions that have been laid out for them to get to their place. It’s normal to want things to remain the same but unfortunately they can’t always. NIMBY’s get crucified but it’s an understandable reaction, you just got to let them have their moment and get on with it. I suppose the problem is when the NIMBY’s lobbying actually stops things from happening.

  16. Was my fav pub in swords by a mile when it was open – the well.

Me and the wife used to always go, DJ on, chilled vibes, was class.

    Miss it…

  17. The pub is a modern build with ‘medieval’ decor. The term ‘heritage landmark’ is meaningless. The building is not a Protected Structure, nor is it even on the NIAH.

  18. I haven’t seen the plans for this part of swords but what they are planning beside airside is silly. 9 storey apartment blocks mostly 1 bed with little to no parking. It was based on the metro station being built.
The premier inn in the retail park is about 6 storey.
There seems to be a few developments in swords happening like this and you would wonder if there was any joined up thinking.
