  1. > “It died a death. It was a failure. And I was crushed…I thought that it might well be [the end of my movie career]. But I was tougher than that,” he said.

    > Midnight showings of the film, however, picked up steam, cementing its cult status as it began to be shown year after year to audiences who brought props and acted out certain scenes in front of the screen.

    > “For your first movie to run for 50 years is crazy,” Curry added of the film’s continued success, all these years later.

  2. It was so bad it was great. That’s the hardest thing to do!

  3. Rocky Horror is the greatest worst movie of all time!

  4. Most cult classics were considered failures. afaik this is the king of all cult classics.

  5. people flatter themselves into thinking they are cleverly ironic by saying a film like this is “good because it is bad” —

but they never say what they claim is bad about it

it is work of genius, ahead of its time, original yet an homage to past greatness . . . there is nothing accidental about why it succeeds . . .

high concept — great production values, performances, design, music, sound, editing . . . quality by any standards . . . deep and hilarious . . .

  6. Did Tim have a stroke or is this just a bad Pic of him?

  7. This is a very disturbing experience as I thought he died in the middle of the 2010″.

  8. Fortunately, it didn’t take that long for it to gain a cult following. I went to a packed midnight showing in the late 70s, and it already had quite a following by then.

Edit: I actually attended 3 midnight showings within a month, all packed.

  9. So was *Phantom of the Paradise* and it’s the better film. Viewers are slowly coming around but it’s taken decades.

  10. The Room was also a huge critical failure and objectively “bad” movie yet it also because a cult classic. That’s just it with art though – you never really know what gains popularity later on.

  11. It’s not even a movie, it’s art. There is so much pure expression in it and it pushes the limits of other people’s expressions.

  12. I just discovered last night that he was the devil in the 1980s movie Legend with Tom Cruise!

    Tim Curry is amazing!!

  13. I was thinking about Tim the other day and honestly thought he passed away. I’m glad to be wrong

  14. I enjoyed plenty of midnight showings in my day but none of those were because it’s actually a good movie.

  15. He was great in Clue, I just watched it again the other day.

  16. This isn’t like an open secret, it’s just part of the history of the movie…
