Hello! We are on our way back home from a trip to Czech Republic, currently at the German border. It’s an 8 hour drive but we still have a couple of days left and would like to split the drive in 3 hour-ish chunks. We have a small van so we can either camp or drive into town and book a room. Just here to check with the locals what would be nice stops, not too remote, not too touristy. We like a small hike during the day and eat out and check out some nightlife in the evening. We are currently thinking Würzburg / Cologne, what do you think? Cheers!!

  1. you could make small stops in Bayreuth and Bamberg. both have world heritage sites. Bamberg old town is very famous. Bayreuth has a gorgeous opera house in the city center and the famous Richard Wagner opera. for hiking I recommend fränkische schweiz (the area between the two towns) you get amazing beer and landscape there.
Würzburg is also very nice, especially for wine lovers.

  2. Hi,

I could recommend Koblenz and the castles along the Rhein and Mosel. If you like wine you have to visit the Mosel.

In Cologne i can recommend Lommerzheim, Puszta-Hütte and Nehring. There is a ton to discover and to explore in Cologne.

    Have fun in Germany!

  3. Thanks so much for the advice! Heading firstly to Bayreuth for a late lunch 😉

  4. Try and fit Bamberg in if you can, it’s a beautiful city

  5. Limburg (the german one) has a nice old town with a cool cathedral and a camping area 10 walking minutes from the old town, nightlife is a bit limited

  6. You can drive through the middle rhine valley and have a look at the castles. It will take longer than the autobahn of course. Enter it in Koblenz and exit it in Bingen am Rhein. I am bot sure which side of the river you should drive on, but take into account that there are no bridges between Koblenz and Mainz
