GSI cannot be paid solely by Greece, Marinakis Says

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis stated that Greece cannot shoulder the entire financial burden of the Greece–Cyprus(GSI) electricity interconnection during an interview with Skai TV.

“We support it, we want it to happen, but it has a dimension we cannot underestimate, which is the sharing of the financial burden. It is obvious that such an important project for Cyprus cannot be paid for solely by the Greek taxpayer,” said Marinakis.

“We are more than just friendly countries, we are completely aligned in terms of national interests. Cyprus is a sister state,” he said, adding that calmness is needed.

“There are also decisions to be made in Cyprus,” Marinakis concluded.

Athens was recently taken aback by remarks from the Cypriot Finance Minister, who described the Crete–Cyprus electricity interconnection project as non-viable. In response, the Greek government called on Nicosia to clarify its stance.

On Monday, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed that “the Republic of Cyprus is fully committed to this project of geostrategic importance.”
