When Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022, the impact was felt around the world. She was 96 years old when she passed at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The monarchy changed drastically as her eldest son, King Charles III, received the coronation. When news of her passing broke, hundreds of people from around the world made their way to the UK to pay their respects.
Queen Elizabeth II was known for being resilient. She faced much adversity throughout her life. She was stoic and devoted to her duty as the leader of the United Kingdom and never backed down. Even when dealing with COVID-19 in her 90s, she stood firm. When her health was truly failing, and it looked like her time was coming. She wasn’t ready to give up her fight, the Queen wanted to make it to one specific event.

The former royal butler, Paul Burrell, wrote in his book that Queen Elizabeth II was diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis came shortly after the death of her husband, Prince Philip, in 2021. The news was devastating for her and the royal family. Doctors gave her only a few months to live, but she was determined to stay alive for something. That was her Platinum Jubilee.
“As far as the family was concerned, everything was fine, but the doctors’ prognosis gave her only until Christmas,” Paul wrote in his book. “The Queen’s response was, ‘Well, that’s a shame, because next year is my Platinum Jubilee year and I’d quite like to have seen that. Can you keep me alive for that?”
Her plea was heard, or perhaps it was simple luck. The event, which celebrated her 70 years on the throne, happened a few months before her passing. However, Paul thinks it was the work of the doctors. They kept her well-medicated and stable. He did state that she was aware her death was coming, but she wanted to stay alive to celebrate her time with the crown. She was able to do so!
