    Following the October 2022 hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, Donald Trump made remarks that were criticized as callous, including amplifying baseless conspiracy theories and mocking the Pelosi family. 

    Amplifying conspiracy theories 

    Shortly after the attack, Trump gave an interview in which he fueled conspiracy theories about the assault. Referencing an unfounded rumor, he suggested that the broken glass in the Pelosi home came from the inside, implying the official account of the break-in was false.

    The conspiracy theories claimed that the attacker, David DePape, was not an intruder but a sexual partner of Paul Pelosi and that the incident was not a random assault.

    Theories were also circulated by others in conservative media, including Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr..

    In a 2023 rally in California, Trump continued to stoke conspiracies about the event. 

    Mocking the family

    During a September 2023 rally in California, Trump mocked the Pelosi family.

    In July 2024, a C-SPAN video clip from a campaign event showed Trump making fun of the attack.

    In response, Nancy Pelosi called him out for his actions, saying he had mocked her husband’s assault. In an August 2024 interview, Pelosi openly spoke about the traumatic attack and Trump’s behavior. 

    Accusing Nancy Pelosi of corruption In August 2025, Trump accused Nancy Pelosi of insider trading based on her husband’s stock trades, referencing her impeachments of him.

    Pelosi has called Trump’s accusations “ridiculous” and politically motivated. 

    Response to the attack

    The intruder, David DePape, reportedly told officers he intended to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and break her kneecaps.

    Police reports and the FBI have debunked the conspiracy theories surrounding the attack.

    Trump initially called the attack a “very sad” situation, but later joined in the mocking and spreading of falsehoods.

  18. The assailant is still at large. The person taken into custody after Charlie Kirk was shot in Utah is not believed to be the shooting suspect. That implies right now that the assailant is still on the run
