TIL there is an organization called the Foundation for the Protection of the Traditional Cheese of Cyprus named Halloumi, formed to get the European Union to give halloumi special status as a geographically protected cheese made only in Cyprus.

  3. also because embarrassingly, cyprus lost the copy rights to halloumi, a year or two ago, because they were lazy… or stupid… or both. probably both

  4. Due to this stupid fight between GC and TC, im wondering what else the world will take from us. I am a father, and all i wanted to pass down to my kids was their Cypriot heritage, instead they got this mess.

    You have Lebanon making Halloumi now, Turkey makes it (very badly might i add) under another name, i believe i saw it from Bulgaria too. It’s ridiculous!
    They started claiming many other Cypriot foods too.
    We are losing everything it is to be Cypriot, but old men in suits, are still debating what happened 48-50 years ago. While settlers come from all directions to our beloved Cyprus, the youth of Cyprus go abroad in large numbers. TC’s in the north, have either left the country, and the remaining ones have married so many non Cypriots, and most have lost their TC accents and way of life.

    I was born and raised in the UK, and am proud to be as my user name suggests. However Cyprus is an open wound for me, as i am mixed with GC, TC, Italian Cypriot and part Maronite. I call myself just Cypriot, but will their even be a term called Cypriot in the future at this rate? I do not see a resolve to this mess for a long long time, and in that time, i fear for our Island that many wolves have their claws on. Sorry, i think this became a mini rant.
