There’s nothing like a bew baby in a hand knitted cardigan.
Keep it, cherish it.
I have one my grandmother made me and it’s something which I hold dearly.
My mother does stuff like this. All that needs to be said is the word “pregnant” and she gets started. Anyone we know who has had babies in recent years has gotten a huge box full of blankets and clothes that are absolutely gorgeous. She made my daughter the most beautiful little dress that we put on her the day she was supposed to be christened (cancelled thanks to covid) and I’ve never seen anything like it. The detail was amazing. I wasn’t lucky enough to inherit her artistic ability sadly.
Beautiful!
My mother used to knit the most unbelievable amount of cardigans and jumpers. Every evening she’d have the knitting needles in her hand while watching Coronation Street. Every time someone was having a baby, she’d knit another one. She got an offer from the regional manager of Debenhams to sell her cardigans in store. Before she got the chance to make that happen, she got really really sick. She died when I was 17. When I had my first child, my sister gave me a wrapped box. I opened it and inside it was a cardigan knitted by my mother, untouched, as she’d made it for a girl who unfortunately never got to have her child in the end. I still have the cardigan, albeit my child is now 5 and won’t wear anything that’s not a Disney princess dress.
Ya can’t bate a good knit, and ya can’t bate a good Mammy. Miss her.
It’s mental, a woman who I don’t think I’ve ever actually met, knitted me three absolutely beautiful cardigans for my baby because she knew my dad growing up. My mams friend knitted my daughter a jumper you’d be hard to come by in a shop, bought Mickey Mouse head buttons especially for it and all!
There’s skill and a well practised hand there. Talent can get a person so far but she obviously has spent years working on pieces and perfecting her craft. Fair play. A lovely cardie, a lucky kiddie!
They were called Aran Jumpers – the fishermen who wore them had individual patterns on them so as they could be identified in the event of a disaster out at sea.
Beautiful work in 3 days. Incredible. What is the pattern?
I remember my ma knitting me a replica Ireland jersey in 1990 rather than buy one. That woman could knit everything.
Knitting and metal are my two favourite things! 🧶🧶
Gorgeous!!! I similarly got a cardigan for my daughter from an aunt. I don’t intend to keep much for her (bc I didn’t want any of the stuff my mom kept for me, feel like it’ll probably be similar) but the cardigan will be kept to pass on!
I saved all the cardigans my nan knit. I don’t know what to do with them but can’t get rid of them. She knit elaborate jumpers with patterns like ice skaters, farm animals, flowers. We kids hated wearing them but now we all have a saved collection.
This is true old school talent. I remember in the 74 my mom bought a knitting machine and I knitted a jersey on it in 3 hours and she sewed it together once it was done. So yes I would know things getting done so quickly. Yes I am that old LOL.
My mam knitted these for anyone who was pregnant and took such pride in them. There was very rarely a night where she wasn’t knitting something. She died 5 years ago and I had my first baby in 2020. When I had the baby, a couple of people who she had gifted knitted cardigans to gave them back to me so that my little boy could have something knitted by his granny. Such a thoughtful thing for them to do.
Also she used to knit the baby hats and premature baby hats for the maternity hospitals.
I don’t know anyone my age.. 30’s who knits. I hope more people take up knitting from this generation because I absolutely love the baby clothes. I’d a neighbour who was knitting the most beautiful set for her granddaughter but said to me oh she probably would rather shop bough clothes. I know I for one would absolutely love a hand knitted item for a baby.
3 nights! Good lord that’s fast lol
These are the best things ever. A babygrow and one of these yokes over is all you need😂
Jesus. It turns out that it’s not just my mother flat out knitting for future babies. It’s great now that I’m at an age where my mates are having kids and I’m able to give a lovely well appreciated gift to the new parents.
