    Also, I thought that 27 years was a little light for trying an insurrection and wanting to overturn an election, but Bolsonaro is 70, so he’d probably die in prison if he isn’t let out early, and even then it’s still a possibility

  3. America is less of a functioning democracy than Brazil and Weimar Germany.

    Lula went to prison too. Brazil has had several military coups. We had that one civil war. Not punishing the confederate leadership harshly is the root of many of our problems.

  5. It’s less than he deserved but more than his lifespan. Finally a 9/11 where I can party without someone being weird out. Also, we will jail the militaries who helped him, something that never happened even after the dictatorship. Thank God we had judges who stand up to save our democracy.

  6. For the first time in a long story of both successful and failed coups, Brazil actually judged and punished the would be dictator and his army pals. A day for the history books.

    Just letting go always lead to more coup attempts usually in the same decade, let’s see how this works out.

  9. Hilarious how the same people decrying authoritarianism gleefully rejoice when it’s their team abusing their power.

    You could make a list of politicians who are right of center and are persecuted by their political opponents, and it would be a longer list than those that *aren’t* being persecuted.

    As conservatives become more popular, the left engages in even more lawfare and censorship.

    If you disagree, that’s fine, but you won’t be able to be surprised when the right keeps attaining more support. Silencing your political opponents is not a lasting political strategy in healthy countries. Godspeed Brazil
