Cooperation signal on US LNG

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met Thursday with US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum at the Maximos Mansion to reaffirm strong US-Greece ties and discuss expanding cooperation on energy security, the Greek government said.

Mitsotakis emphasized the “strategic character of Greek-American relations and defense and energy cooperation,” pointing to Greece’s growing role as an energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and Southeastern Europe. He cited projects such as the Great Sea Interconnector and GREGY Interconnector and proposed a corridor linking Alexandroupoli and Odesa, an idea raised during his June visit to Ukraine. Mitsotakis also stressed the importance of Greek shipping in LNG transport.

Marking the September 11 anniversary, Mitsotakis condemned the killing of Charlie Kirk, saying, “Political violence has no place in our democracy, and freedom of speech must be protected at all costs.”

Burgum, representing the Trump administration, described Greece as a “strategic partner” and highlighted US investment in LNG production and exports. “The Trump administration has a couple of goals around energy, and one of those is energy abundance, so energy to our friends and our allies so they do not have to buy from our adversaries,” Burgum said, stressing the United States’ absolute commitment to replace Russian gas with American gas.
