Boris Johnson ‘says he didn’t break lockdown law by being at wife Carrie’s ‘Abba party’ because he was there to interview one of her best friends for a job’

  1. Not even trying to put decent excuses together:

    >Boris Johnson says he did not break the law by attending wife Carrie’s Abba party because he was there to interview one of her best friends for a job, it has been claimed.
    >
    >The Prime Minister is said to have invited Harry Newman to join him in his No 11 flat, where he lives with Carrie and his two children, on November 13, 2020.
    >
    >The Met is investigating whether a party took place in No 11 on that night to mark the departure of Johnson’s former advisers Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain.
    >
    >They are looking into claims that the party was organised by Carrie with Abba songs played.
    >
    >Mr Johnson previously told MPs he was working and now a government source said he also claimed he was interviewing Newman, who was then an advisor to Michael Gove, in another part of the flat.
    >
    >According to the Times, Mr Johnson said he invited Newman to the flat to distance themselves from leaving drinks that were being held for Lee Cain.
    >
    >The Prime Minister is said to have given a toast and short speech at the leaving drinks, which are also being investigated.
    >
    >Newman is a close friend of Mr Johnson’s wife Carrie, who has previously referred to him as one of her ‘favourite people’ and her political ‘bestie’. He is believed to be a regular visitor to No 11. …

  2. From Apr 2021 :

    >A good friend of Boris Johnson’s fiancee, Carrie Symonds, has been accused of leaking government plans for a second coronavirus lockdown last year in Dominic Cummings’ explosive attack on the prime minister.
    >
    >Johnson’s former top aide alleged that the prime minister had been told that “all the evidence” pointed to special adviser Henry Newman, whom he described as a “chatty rat”. Newman, who has since moved to No 10, was an adviser at the Cabinet Office at the time of the leak last year.
    >
    >Cummings claimed Johnson was “very upset” at the incident implicating Newman, as it would cause “very serious problems” with Symonds if the adviser were fired because the pair were “best friends”. He alleged that the prime minister wanted to cancel the inquiry into the leak for this reason.
    >
    >No 10 has denied the accusations, stating on Friday night: “The PM has never interfered in a government leak inquiry.”
    >
    >But who is Henry Newman? …
    >
    >([*Guardian: Who is Henry Newman, Carrie Symonds’ friend and alleged ‘chatty rat’?*](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/apr/24/chatty-rat-he-may-be-carrie-symonds-best-friend-but-who-is-henry-newman))

  3. If this is true, what a way to interview people for a job, and no wonder number 10 is such a poor operation.

If this was true, it would have been said months ago, I think.

I wonder if you could enter the utterances of Boris Johnson for the Booker Prize for Fiction.

  4. I mean that is how Coronavirus works “ohh you are not here for the party, just here to interview someone? Fair enough I won’t contaminate you, now could you point me in the direction of a party guest?”

Is he really this dumb or is he just taking the piss?

  5. So I guess there will be a paper trail, copies of emails inviting him for interview, interview notes, job description, list of other candidates interviewed or rejected. Etc

All incredibly easy for the PM to produce as evidenced to clear up any confusion.

  6. When I “say” something, I’m saying something. When Boris Johnson “says” something, he is lying. Use the right verb: “Boris Johnson *lied* that he didn’t break lockdown law…”

  7. The incompetence and nepotism displayed in that recruitment process should be grounds for his resignation alone.

  8. Jobs for friend’s,this isn’t at daddy’s work in the factory’s this is the highest office FFS FED UP OF THIS GOV SHITE

  9. Ignoring that this is clearly bullshit, even if we take this at face value and say ‘he was there concurrently to interview someone late in the evening’, there’s still the question of ‘Why wasn’t the interview done remotely?’

November 2020 was full-on ‘stay at home’ lockdown with not even non-essential shops open. Why the hell would you not conduct a work interview remotely? Work meetings were only meant to be for where there was no possibility whatsoever of doing it remotely.

  10. Oh yeah, because no one else has been doing interviews on Zoom or anything. This is a ridiculously flimsy argument. Open and shut case. All the multiple times he *could* have done something differently, and just simply *chose* not to.

His own birthday bash in his own garden, for instance. Even if he ‘only attended briefly’, it’s just plain *wrong*. No one else was allowed to do stuff like that.

  11. There are 3 levels of lie each worse than the other; Lies, Damn Lies and whatever Boris is saying.

  12. When you have never, and will never, be held accountable for your actions you can literally say any old shit.

  13. Doesn’t matter, if I said to an officer “No officer I wasn’t at the party. Well I was, but not for that reason. I went there to meet a friend. Well not meet a friend, I was doing business plans with that said friend” I’m still gonna be paying a 10k fine lol.

Ether way, this is how they do business without the full attention of the parliament knowing. Throw a party and chat.

Ether way they threw a party which at the time was illegal

  14. If anything this is the most damning thing I’ve yet read. Johnson says he retired to the flat in order to avoid one party, but there was a party going on in the flat too.

This indicates a widespread culture of disregard for restrictions, so much so that Johnson couldn’t escape them.

Whether or not Johnson personally attended events, it suggests that he had lost all control of what was going on in his own office.

  15. Who knew everyone couple have got around lockdown rules by having a party and then the DJ stops the music for a second so everyone asks the person next to them “want a job?” and then everyone just replies “I’ll think about tit” and then carry on with the rest of the job interview/party.

We’re such fools to have not realised this is how the rules, that Boris Johnson said he didn’t understand, worked.

  16. Interesting read of the comments on the article.

The average mail reader isn’t happy with BoJo or the Tories.

When the majority of people foaming at the mouth in the daily mail comments want the tories out then surely this is a positive sign?

  17. So the wife should be fined 10kf or hosting a party then.

Tory party and more cronyism? I thought all positions need to be advertised in am open and transparent manner ..

  18. Op, please don’t post stuff like this and then follow it with a link from the Daily Mail. You’re just providing free clicks for one of the worst media companies in the UK.

    Sincerely

    The UK

  19. Fucko McfuckFace won’t get kicked out because of breaking the rules he set, because the people who vote Tory admire him for it. They all think of themselves as duckers and divers.

What will get Boris kicked out is the Economy tanking. The pound is crashing as inflation rises which adds even more costs to imports. Most leaders would worry about this but of course they want high inflation because it lowers the value of their debts. Despite all the bullshit about the Tories being the party of good governance they borrow money like it’s going out of fashion to fund the low taxes for the wealthy.

Of course we all have to suffer another wasted period of time after the last 12 years of lost time and hundreds, possible thousands will die for the Tory policy of keeping the rich rich.

    Vote Tory: get fucked.
