Migrants stranded on Crete due to confusion

More than 340 Sudanese migrants remain at a makeshift reception center in Hania’s Agyia district weeks after arriving near mid-August, local officials said.

Conditions at the former exhibition hall are unsuitable for long-term housing, and the city has spent over €610,000 on food and maintenance without state aid, Deputy Mayor Eleni Zervoudaki said.

Confusion over ministry responsibilities has stalled transfers to mainland facilities, while forecasts of warmer October weather raise fears of new arrivals.

Migration Minister Thanos Plevris pledged a closed migrant facility will be built on Crete.
