We can’t attract people because we don’t pay enough? Is that the root cause here?

  1. Worked in McDonald’s myself for a while in college. People I worked with were lovely but customers were awful.Proper looked down on you.Especially on Sundays

  2. Currently we are experiencing the tightest labour market in history.
So even places that do pay a living wage are finding it hard to hire staff.

  3. Hyperbole aside, my wife works in recruitment for an essential business (food retail). They pay a good wage, and have increased pay rates across all levels, but still can’t hire staff. People don’t want to work in the industry anymore. I suspect McDonald’s have the same problem

  4. I dont think the pay is the main problem here, its the arseholes that come into the places that think they own it.

  5. A lot of people still seem to be of the attitude that fast food in particular is a slacker’s paradise full of teenagers. It’s certainly not that way now, knowing friends who work there. The demographic of the workers is skewing older and older and constantly being on a skeleton crew by company policy certainly does not make for an appealing workplace.

  6. from what I’ve heard, the issue with macdonalds isn’t necessarily the wages or management, its the customers who treat you like shit

  7. Anybody that needs to be told this, doesn’t deserve to get fast food let alone operate a car. How hard is it to not be a piece of shit towards people working terrible hours and shit wages while making your food?

  8. I’d say it’s more to do with customers. Local one where I live is terrorised daily by teens. Really nasty shits.

    Garda can’t do anything.

  9. wages are just a factor in why someone stays in a job, in a customer facing role like this quite often its just cunstomers make people want to quit

  10. Problem with McDonalds is some of the customer who threat the staff like shite, make a complete mess in the place and then walk off expecting someone to clean it up

I think everyone agrees with this

  11. I watched a women in the drive thru knock on the window with her orange juice and demand napkins for her meal, big shout out to the employee who may have pushed about 1000 napkins though the window into her car then closed the drive thru window and walked away. Funniest shit I’ve seen this week

  12. Customer service staff are treated like shit. Wages are an issue because of this. How much could you paid to deal with entitled, rude and impatient customers- not enough.

  13. Not surprised. I’ve never worked in one but I’ve heard horror stories about a husband and wife franchisee treating their staff very poorly and subjecting them to verbal abuse so much so that no one will work for them

  14. I’m sorry people treat them like shite, having worked in retail for years I know all about it. I’ll always be as nice as I can.

  15. Mcdonalds are blaming it on a lack of staff but every time I have been there since the new system with order number in place, it is just a shit show.

You got in for a coffee and they make 10 huge orders infront of yours. The staff can’t handle high passed sales anymore. I work there full time for 6 years and know the standards that had been in place were a lot better. 15 minutes for an order should never happen in Mcdonald

  16. It’s a shame as I’ve had order’s that have got messed up but this stuff happens and no need to be an ” eye’s front” about it and tbh it’s not just Mac d’s as I work in a completely different industry and people are just more ignorant in general and there’s no excuse for it…. ignorance and bad manners just ruin people’s day

  17. Problem isn’t so much their pay but that the pay doesn’t go very far in this country because of all the other economic problems. Worked in McDonald’s back in the day and it was enough to get you week to week back then. Not with rent nowadays.

  18. In fairness, a lot of businesses are struggling to find staff at the moment. That’s one of the reasons we’re welcoming so many Ukrainian refugees – we know we can provide jobs for them

  19. Management and wages are good. Just like any job about. It can always be better but with this sub’s narrative sometimes its the customers that is the problem.

  20. When labour market conditions tighten people tend to avoid these roles.

On top of that young people are not as tough or resilient as their parents, or they are smarter and value other things, whatever your view. It means they will not work in a place where they have to graft and develop skills. They will not work in a place that doesn’t align to their values, that’s why you see companies going the diversity and inclusion route (which behind the scenes they don’t give a flying fxck about to be honest)

Younger people/low skill labour have grown up with more privilege, they are either not strong enough to do the job, or they value their mental health more than a job. They’d rather be unemployed and relatively happy, than employed and relatively miserable.

It’s good and it’s bad. It shows Ireland has developed economically. Those from lower socioeconomic circumstances must now do those jobs, as the Irish won’t. Good that the quality of jobs for Irish is much better than when I was young, but bad because we used to be humble and lack notions. We would roll up the sleeves.
