  1. You must be an optimist!

It was built when the mines and steel industry were already struggling and even closing. It is arguably the best example of waffle iron politics our there. Only in the last couple of years did the traffic figures pick up but still way lower than its projected capacity. It doesn’t help that its too expensive to maintain. In 2023 it was closed for a couple of months as a boat rammed a gate. The other container was in repairs for 1,5 years already!

  2. It’s one of those very expensive megalomaniac structures, which will never pay itself back. Typical example of Belgian money squandering in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

  3. i would be more proud if that money went into a sovereign wealth fund instead

  4. The most Belgian thing ever: not being proud of an amazing piece of engineering, but just rambling on about the cost of it

  5. Trainstation of Mons/Liege would like a word.

Great Engineering (although i would call Calatrava great architecture/poor engineering), but thrown away money

  6. I’m wondering if this post would have receive the same amount of criticism if this piece of engineering would append to be located in the other side of the language border…

  7. It really is a nice piece of enginering! Did the trip up and down a few times and it is really nice. Also the old way was nice, did that one also a few times.

  8. Kinda weird to call ronquieres an elevator when it’s more like an escalator, especially knowing we actually also have a boat elevator in Strepy.
