📸: Police prepare as Melbourne march begins
We’re hearing from our colleagues on the ground in the Melbourne CBD that a large group of demonstrators, who are protesting against racism, have started marching through the city.
Victoria Police officers have stood in single file along Swanston Street towards Collins Street to keep the crowd in control.
Police are also monitoring the moving crowd, as they chant slogans such as “always was, always will be, aboriginal land.”
There are First Nations leaders in ceremonial attire leading the crowd.

‘Remigration’ protesters gather in Sydney
We’re starting to receive some footage from a planned “Remigration Rally” happening in the Sydney CBD.
There are a handful of people in attendance, and multiple people wearing patches featuring symbols associated with Nazism.
Remigration is a notion linked to far-right ideology that calls for the mass deportation of non-European peoples from Western nations.
The rally has also attracted multiple speakers who characterise themselves as Australian nationalists and are pushing for immediate cuts to immigration as well as a return to the White Australia Policy, which was first implemented in 1901 and fully abolished in 1973.
We’ll keep you across any further updates from these rallies as we receive them.

📸: Rallies begin in Brisbane
We’re also starting to see that protesters are gathering in parts of the Brisbane CBD for various rallies.
Patches of light rain has been falling across the city over the past hour, but it appears that demonstrators haven’t been deterred by the weather.
In King George Square, an Indigenous Sovereignity rally has started with a crowd of what appears to be dozens of people.

About a kilometre away in the city’s Botanic Gardens, a Save Australia rally has also started involving a large group of people wearing and waving Australian flags.
That rally is pushing for a stop to mass migration and an end to what protest organisers claim is government corruption overseen by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Dozens rally against racism in Alice Springs

About 50 to 60 people have gathered on the lawns across from the Alice Springs Local Court for today’s rally against racism, one of many happening across the country as part of a national day of action.
Speaking to the crowd, Alice Springs traditional owner Faron Peckham said for the next generation of Australians to be stronger and better, they’d need to “walk together”.

“Disempower [racism] by ignoring it and by doing what we need to do,” Mr Peckham said.

Demonstrators stand against racism in Melbourne’s CBD

Here in Melbourne, Flinders St intersection is now cut off with people, including those holding Aboriginal flags and signs saying “migrants are welcome” and “campaign against racism and fascism”.
This event was organised in response to the attacks on Camp Sovereignty almost two weeks ago. The protest and sacred site is less than 1km down the road.
Eight people, including Neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell, have been charged over that incident.
I’ve spoken to several people already about why they’re here, including an Aboriginal grandmother who reiterated why it is important to stand up for culture.
One person speaking to the crowd right now also just had this to say:
“Love is resistance. Love is power. Knowledge is the key.”
There is a significant police presence here, with dozens of uniformed officers standing at the intersection before crowds started to gather around 11am.

‘We’re going to throw the book at you’: Minns on potential violence at Sydney rallies
The New South Wales premier says he’s concerned about the “rising rhetoric” or “political opinion turning into political hate”, as protestors prepare to rally across Sydney.
Chris Minns says, “political violence is the last thing we need in New South Wales”.
“As a civic leader, and as the leader of the state, I’m going to do everything I can with the NSW Police that if anyone crosses that line and their opinion jumps from just an opinion into forcing someone to believe it, or trying to assault someone because they don’t believe it, we’re going to throw the book at you,” he said.

Police powers boosted ahead of Melbourne rallies
With up to four different rallies set to happen in close proximity to one another in major cities and regional centres, police are reminding people planning on attending to be vigilant.
My colleague Jason Katsaras told ABC News Channel a short time ago that in Melbourne, police have declared a designated area for the CBD.
That will mean that police have more power to search individuals attending the rallies, and a higher number of officers will be brought into the area to keep each of the demonstrations under control.
The measures come after six people were arrested and police resorted to using rubber bullets and capsicum spray during the March for Australia on August 31.
Another seven men were charged, including Neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell, after an attack was waged on the First Nations Camp Sovereignty in the hours after that protest.
“Police haven’t said whether they will specifically have more police on the ground at Camp Sovereignty, but they’ve alluded to it,” Katsaras reported.
“They’ve said it is a priority and they don’t want to see a repeat of what happened there.”
You can read more on that incident via the link below.

Welcome to today’s live coverage
Major delays are expected across Australian cities, and extra police have been deployed in response to multiple marches and rallies planned today.
In Melbourne, four opposing groups are expected to demonstrate — including the Free Palestine Coalition, Rally Against Racism, Save Australia, and Australia Unites against Government Corruption.
The ABC understands there are protests across other Australian cities related to these groups.
While there are several opposing immigration, March for Australia organisers, who were behind national marches on August 31, claim they are not associated with any of the demonstrations today.
We’ll bring you all of the updates here.
