From Waste to Value

On September 11, the Nordic Pavilion hosted the special event “From Waste to Value”, featuring two pioneering Icelandic companies: Blue Lagoon Iceland and Kerecis. Both shared how they have successfully transformed unused resources into sustainable businesses with global impact.

Nature and Technology in Harmony: Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is world-renowned as a “miracle spa,” created from the silica and mineral-rich seawater that are byproducts of geothermal energy. Its striking blue waters and unique natural setting attract visitors from across the globe. Building on this natural resource, Blue Lagoon has expanded beyond tourism, developing bioactive skincare and wellness solutions. Today, it stands as a symbol of Icelandic innovation and a globally recognized wellness brand.

At the event, Siggi Thorsteinsson (Head of Branding, Design, and Development) and Helga Arnadottir (Head of Sales, Operations and Services) shared how the company leverages environmental resources to create new business opportunities, evolving from a unique travel destination into a leader in the wellness industry.

From Fish Skin to Medical Innovation: Kerecis

Kerecis has pioneered the use of sustainably sourced cod fish skin—once discarded as waste—in regenerative medicine. Harnessing the anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3 fatty acids, the company has developed advanced treatments for burns, wounds, and tissue regeneration. This groundbreaking technology has gained rapid adoption across Europe and North America, saving lives while creating value for both society and the environment.

Representing Kerecis were Fertram Sigurjonsson (Founder and CEO) and Magnus Hermannsson (VP of Market and Partner Development), who spoke passionately about transforming unused resources into life-saving medical solutions and their growing impact on global healthcare.

Iceland’s Vision for the Future

This event highlighted how Iceland—a nation of just 370,000 people—has become a hub of innovation by merging nature with technology. Both companies exemplify the theme of “From Waste to Value” by breathing new life into resources once destined for disposal, generating benefits across the environment, society, and the economy.

We are delighted that visitors had the opportunity to experience Iceland’s commitment to turning natural resources into sustainable value.

The Nordic Pavilion will continue to host a variety of events in the coming months—please stay tuned.
