Scientists in Antarctica have uncovered a network of over 300 canyons on the seafloor around the continent, reaching depths of about 4,000 metres, and rivalling the world’s largest submarine systems. 

These structures are pathways between the continental shelf and the abyss, serving a critical role in the region’s climate and ecology.

This discovery was made possible by a new Atlas published in Marine Geology, showing the Antarctic’s seafloor in more detail than ever before.
