NATO bulks up defences on eastern flank after Russian drone incursion • FRANCE 24 English

Days after Russian drones flew into Poland’s airspace, NATO is flexing its muscles with a new operation dubbed Eastern Sentry. It aims to reinforce the alliance’s eastern flank bordering Barus, Russia, and Ukraine. NATO’s core task is to deter aggression and defend every member of this alliance against whatever threats we face. Safeguarding our eastern flank is of utmost importance. Denmark, France, the UK, and Germany have already offered contributions, including fighter jets, ships, and groundbased air defense systems. The alliance has maintained a permanent air mission known as air policing since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Poland is hailing the latest initiative after Warsaw said it was sure Russia’s drone incursion was no mistake. Russia’s reckless actions represent not only a breach of international law, but also a destabilizing escalation that brings the entire region closer to conflict. Russia has denied responsibility for the incursion and says it was physically impossible for Russian drones to have reached Poland. The US, meanwhile, has vowed to defend every inch of NATO territory.

NATO said Friday it’s bulking up its defensive posture on its eastern flank bordering Belarus, Russia and Ukraine with new equipment to deter potential Russian aggression following an incursion by Russian drones into Polish territory. The alliance’s supreme commander in Europe said a new operation, dubbed Eastern Sentry, will add equipment from France, Denmark, Germany and the UK to its existing air and ground-based defenses.
