Trump calls on NATO members to stop purchasing Russian oil • FRANCE 24 English

A letter from Donald Trump to NATO countries with an ultimatum. Stop buying oil from Russia and the US will impose major economic sanctions on Moscow. The US president made the announcement on his truth social platform. As you know, NATO’s commitment to win has been far less than 100% and the purchase of Russian oil by some has been shocking. It greatly weakens your negotiating position and bargaining power over Russia. Anyway, I am ready to go. When you are, just say when. It’s not the first time Trump has suggested ending Russian oil imports, but meeting those demands would mark a major shift for NATO. While the EU imposed a ban on maritime Russian oil imports and refined oil products like diesel, a number of countries continue to import Russian fossil fuels and liqufied natural gas. Crude oil is also still being imported by Hungary and Slovakia, something that’s causing a rift among EU members. I think President Trump when he says that Europe needs to stop buying Russian oil and gas is right. Uh and the finger points in two places. One is Hungary and the other one is Slovakia. And of course we make sure that President Trump is aware of who uh is feeding the Russian war machine. So far the EU plans for its member states to completely phase out Russian oil by 2028. But Trump’s ultimatum was not just sent to the EU. His letter includes Turkey, which is the third largest purchaser of Russian oil after China and India. The US president has already punished India, doubling tariffs to 50% on its exports to the United States.

President Donald Trump said Saturday he believes the Russia-Ukraine war would end if all NATO countries stopped buying oil from Russia and placed tariffs on China of 50 percent to 100 percent for its purchases of Russian petroleum. Since 2023, NATO member Turkey has been the third largest buyer of Russian oil, after China and India.

  1. Surprisingly, this might be the first time I agree with Trump, even if I know that he has an agenda behind it, which is to sell US oil to NATO countries. Not sure that would be a good deal though, considering the volatility of Trump when it comes to economics.

  2. Trump will do anything to avoid confronting Putin. I would love to know what he has on him. Same as Putin had on Yeltsin's opponent, and that won him the premiership?

  3. When a supplier of oil is demanding the NATO countries stop buying Russian oil it is only demanding those countries buy more US oil. The EU countries should be a bit more interested in their own economies than crawling around after the US.

  4. Trump tells the truth. Europe have been buying oil and gas from Russia while they slaughter Ukrainians. Disgusting and cowards.

  5. It turns out that Europe has been buying Russian oil through India, but isn't allowed to buy it in other countries? This is simply ridiculous

  6. Hungary is a pro-Russian nation that supports Russias actions. Turkey will never stop buying Russian oil. Trump and Putin know this and that's why Trump said this. So he does not need to do anything more.

  7. Which means NATO – Coalition of the Nothing will do Nothing. Ukraine should brace itself for prolonged war.

  8. Once Russian oil gas stopped, Europe has to accept the exorbitant price set by US and its middle east buddies, while rest of the world will enjoy a much cheaper energy price supplied by Russia, Iran and Venezuela.

  9. Turkey is buying oil/gas from Russia and re-exporting (perhaps refined) to various EU countries, correct? Correct. Same with India? Yes.

  10. Why doesn't he imposed the additional tariffs himself??
It's obvious he is trying to do in his allies.
