Having the munchies has consequences
the drug that makes people get the “munchies” and eat more, increases risk of type 2 diabetes, heavily linked to people overweight? seems logical, at least.
Healthy snacks are key. Same with staying hydrated.
Ha, I beat the statistic.
I don’t have diabetes, just fatty liver. Take that science!

I mean this has to be due to people stuffing their face with junk food.
Twinkie intake goes up 650%, Doritos intake 345%, Diabeetus rates quadruple.
This is unpublished work scheduled to be pressented at a scientific conference and has not undergone peer review.
it seems to be based primarily on epidemiological data and patient reported cannabis use and appears to be cross sectional.
most epidemiological work is unable to demonstrate causal relationships. the only exception to this is with the use of mendelian randomization methods
[ Cannabis use does not impact on type 2 diabetes: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study (2021)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33580533//)
a cross sectional study compares populations of thc users to non users. a longitudinal study assesses the development of a condition in each individual over time.
[ Cannabis Use as Risk or Protection for Type 2 Diabetes: A Longitudinal Study of 18 000 Swedish Men and Women (2016)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27843955/)
“The present study suggests that there is no association between cannabis use and subsequent type 2 diabetes after controlling for age. To make more robust conclusions prospective studies, with longer periods of follow-up and more detailed information about cannabis use, are needed. ”
The current aggregate of peer reviewed evidence on the topic, imo, does not support a causal association between thc use and t2d.
there are quite a few cross sectional studies in the past that even show mild negative correlations between thc use and t2d. perhaps when this analysis is actually out, it will influence conclusions in the other direction considering it has such a large sample size. but it is not out yet.
“Despite the important findings, this is a retrospective study and cannot prove that cannabis use causes diabetes, and the authors cannot rule out the possibility that other unmeasured factors may have influenced the results despite efforts to reduce confounding bias via propensity score matching. This study has limitations due to a lack of detailed cannabis consumption data and potential misclassification”.
This is precisely why such studies should be encouraged and people should be able to openly report usage without negative consequence.

I wonder what we could have learned about this drug if we treated it as a medication instead of using it to desensitize entire generations and wage a war on drugs.
I already have diabetes, if I continue to consume cannabis will I develop super diabetes?
I’ve lost 11kg since starting cannabis. I think mostly because I lost the desire to drink, so even with the munchies I’m consuming less sugar/alcohol. But I can also see it causing an increase in appetite and decrease in motivation to be mobile, which for those who don’t drink to begin with could lead to weight gain and the associated insulin resistance and diabetes risks.
Suspiciously similar comments are suspicious.
Lmao classic munchies
So the government will keep it a schedule 1 drug to protect the people from getting type 2 diabetes? So much for personal responsibility freedom and choice
Well, my dinner was a cannabis edible and a salad. I’ll probably be ok.
Everyone laughing about munchies, but all the people I know that use cannabis are in great shape.
Yeah, much more prone to eating lots of sweets. However, this data set is bad so just totally ignore this article.
I call bullshit
Who paid for this study ? Really
Is it American adults or worldwide? If it’s just USA…then it’s more of our culture and food options
As I have deep mistrust with our corporate owned politicians I suspect that this is laying some misinformation groundwork for all the diabetes cases increasing now. It CANNOT be the corn syrup and sugar in everything so shift the blame to weed.
“unhealthy dietary behaviours.”
Maybe the users are predominantly people who are already in severe pain and therefore less ambulatory.
That’s why you learn to love broccoli and salads. That shit tastes amazing when you’re stoned.
Yep. It was the cannabis. Not all the consumed sugar. Are scientists seriously this stupid?
They allowed more than just cannabis in this study, so it wasn’t even controlled properly to even study with any confidence.. why even post this? lol what?
I’m no scientist and have no evidence to back this up, but I doubt that using cannabis directly raises your diabetes risk. It could be that the munchies are a very real thing, and you tend to overeat by a lot when you have the munchies.
If you have daily munchies, you gotta learn to control that sh*t or do all your eating when you aren’t high.
I just highly doubt that using cannabis, and not eating afterwards, is somehow raising your diabetes risk.
Ooooo now tell us what alcohol increases the risk of!
Drug that makes people hungry increases risk of diabetes ….
In other news the next pope is likely to be catholic and the sun will probably rise tomorrow 🙃
