This year, Queen Letizia will face one of the toughest and most melancholic birthdays of her life. What should be a day full of joy and celebration has been overshadowed by a reason that Casa Real hasn’t been able to hide.
There is no doubt that September 15 is a very special date for all members of the Spanish royal family. Letizia is turning 53 years old.

However, far from being a day of pure joy, in 2025, Queen Letizia is facing an especially difficult anniversary. The main reason is none other than the absence of her daughters, who won’t be able to be with her on such a significant day.
Queen Letizia celebrates her 53rd birthday far from her daughters, Leonor and Sofía
Despite being a day of celebration, Queen Letizia is experiencing a day marked by nostalgia and discomfort. This year, neither Infanta Sofía nor Princess Leonor will be by her side during her birthday celebration. All of this is due to their respective responsibilities.
In the case of the heir to the throne, on September 1, she moved into the General Air and Space Academy of San Javier (Murcia). She will remain there for the next few months to complete the final phase of her military training.

Meanwhile, Infanta Sofía is already in Lisbon, the city where she has started her studies in political science and international relations. In her case, Letizia and Felipe VI have chosen to enroll their daughter at Forward College, a private institution affiliated with the University of London.
During her first year of college, the young woman will study at this campus. However, this study plan, which costs about €18,500 per year, will also take place in two other European capitals: Paris and Berlin, one for each academic year.

Currently, both young women are fully focused on their academic obligations, which is why they haven’t been able to travel to Madrid to be with Queen Letizia during her latest birthday.
This difficult but understandable situation leaves the monarch without the company of the most important people in her life. For a mother, this becomes a hard blow on a day that should be marked by family closeness.
Although she fully understands it, there is no doubt that the distance between them becomes even more noticeable during a celebration that, under other circumstances, would be much more intimate.
In addition, as if the absence of her daughters weren’t enough, this birthday comes after a controversial weekend. This weekend, King Juan Carlos I was in the news again for the party he organized in Sanxenxo on Saturday, September 13.
