Fr Vincent Mary Micallef OP has been re-elected as Provincial Prior of the Maltese Dominican Province. The election took place on Saturday, 13 September 2025, during the Provincial Chapter at the Dominican Convent in Valletta.
The Provincial Chapter, held every four years, is considered one of the most important events in the life of the Order. It brings together Dominican brothers from across Malta to reflect on their mission, address current challenges, and plan for the future. Alongside Fr Micallef’s re-election, Fr Claudio Borg, Fr Michael Camilleri, Fr Reno Muscat and Fr Alan Joseph Adami were elected as definitors, while Fr Pawlu Gatt and Fr Aaron Zahra will serve as council members.
Born in Valletta in 1950, Fr Micallef joined the Dominican Order in 1967 and was ordained priest in 1974 by Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi. He then spent 30 years as a missionary in Brazil, where he served as parish priest in several communities, taught at the Dominican Faculty of Theology in São Paulo, and was elected Provincial of the Dominican Province of Bartolomeu de Las Casas between 2006 and 2009. During this time, he also founded a school for children with physical and mental disabilities in Faxinal and was later recognised as an honorary citizen of Curitiba for his pastoral work among the poor.
Since returning to Malta in 2010, Fr Micallef has served in the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima, Guardamanġa, first as vice-parish priest and later as parish priest. He was elected Provincial Prior of the Maltese Dominican Province of St Pius V for the first time in 2021, before being confirmed once again in this year’s Chapter.
