Between June and August 2025, Spain added to Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, France, and a number of other nations fueling Milan Bergamo Airport’s summer boom, taking the airport above four million passengers. The boom was propelled by rising demand for trips with Spain as the top foreign market, followed by robust performances from Egypt, Bosnia, Greece, and France. These nations’ efforts were enhanced by increased flight operations, new routes, and Milan Bergamo’s increasing popularity as a major hub for both holiday and business travel. This combined growth saw one of the busiest and most successful summer periods in the airport’s history

Robust Growth in Non-Schengen Markets

The airport witnessed strong growth in its non-Schengen markets, particularly with a 1.7% year-on-year increase, bringing the total to 1.05 million passengers. This surge was largely attributed to the addition of new routes and the expansion of services to existing destinations. Milan Bergamo’s position as a key gateway to non-Schengen destinations has been reinforced by enhanced connectivity, providing travelers with more options to explore international locations.

Egypt: A Star Performer

Among the standout performers this summer was Egypt, where passenger traffic increased by an impressive 36%, reaching 82,889 travelers. This significant growth was fueled by the arrival of Air Cairo, which launched new routes from Sharm El Sheikh to Milan Bergamo. Additionally, the continued strong performance of other carriers on routes to Egypt contributed to the overall rise in traffic. Egypt’s appeal as a popular leisure destination, coupled with competitive flight options, ensured that Milan Bergamo became a key hub for tourists heading to this North African destination.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Rapid Increase in Traffic

Bosnia and Herzegovina also saw remarkable growth, with traffic nearly doubling during the summer months. Passenger numbers surged by 96%, reaching 17,342 travelers. This growth was largely driven by the launch of SkyAlps’ flights to Mostar, along with the ongoing strong performance of services to Sarajevo. The demand for flights to Bosnia and Herzegovina reflects the rising interest in destinations in the Balkan region, which is becoming increasingly popular with travelers seeking unique cultural experiences.

Expanding Connectivity to the Middle East and Southeast Asia

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) continued to be one of the fastest-growing markets for Milan Bergamo, reinforcing its role as a vital hub for long-haul travelers heading to popular leisure destinations. This summer, passengers connecting through the UAE were headed to some of the most sought-after spots in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, including Bangkok, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, the Maldives, Zanzibar, and Phuket. The airport’s connectivity to the UAE has become a critical component of its expanding route network, providing Milan Bergamo passengers with numerous options for onward travel.

Traffic to Dubai remained stable, with a consistent double-daily service offered throughout August. Meanwhile, Sharjah experienced a notable 21% increase in passenger traffic, further cementing the airport’s strong links to the Gulf, Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.

Spain: Leading International Market

Spain maintained its position as Milan Bergamo’s leading international market throughout the summer, with flights to popular destinations such as Barcelona, Madrid, and Palma de Mallorca showing consistently strong demand. In addition to Spain, routes to Greece, Portugal, France, and Turkey also performed well, reflecting the ongoing popularity of Mediterranean destinations for leisure travelers.

Infrastructure Upgrades Enhance Passenger Experience

Despite the heavy demand during the peak summer season, Milan Bergamo Airport was able to maintain high standards of passenger comfort, thanks to key infrastructure upgrades completed ahead of the busy months. A significant expansion of the check-in area was one of the major improvements, with the number of counters nearly doubling from 34 to 64, which included the installation of 22 self-drop units. These enhancements were crucial in improving operational efficiency and reducing wait times during peak hours.

In addition to the check-in area improvements, the opening of the new BGY EXECUTIVE facilities provided an elevated experience for both scheduled and private flight passengers. The new amenities offered premium services and contributed to a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience, ensuring that passengers enjoyed a higher level of comfort during their journey.

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO, said: “We are pleased with Milan Bergamo Airport’s performance over the peak summer months, particularly the continued growth we have seen across our non-Schengen markets. This expansion of our international network reaffirms our position as one of Italy’s busiest and most dynamic airports. The strategic investments we made in infrastructure upgrades ahead of the season, including expanded check-in facilities and enhanced passenger processing areas, have paid off, allowing us to manage high passenger volumes while ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey for travellers.”

Looking Ahead: Winter and the 2026 Winter Olympics

As the airport looks toward the winter season, there is an expectation of continued strong demand, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The airport’s growing route network, coupled with its modern facilities, positions it well to support the increased volume of passengers expected during this period. Milan Bergamo is set to play a key role in facilitating both leisure and business travel as visitors flock to the region for the highly anticipated international event.

From June to August 2025, Spain, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, France, and others supported Milan Bergamo Airport’s stunning growth, contributing to more than four million passengers. The growth was fueled by rising demand, new destinations, and improved links to the most important international destinations.

The airport’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and expand services ensure that it will remain a vital hub for passengers traveling to and from Milan. With its strategic location, modern amenities, and expanded connectivity, Milan Bergamo Airport is poised for further growth and success as it continues to cater to the evolving needs of the global traveler.

Milan Bergamo Airport’s profitable summer season clearly reflects the high demand for air travel and the airport’s capacity to evolve with changing passenger requirements. Through ongoing investment in infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, and an unrelenting commitment to passenger comfort, Milan Bergamo is poised to continue to be a leading force in European aviation. With the airport moving into winter, it is well-placed to respond to passengers’ needs and contribute to the growth of the area as a leisure and business tourist destination.
