BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M’s Bush School of Government and Public Service will host several notable voices in the international community for a discussion on Syria this week.
On Tuesday, the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) will host the “Syria at a Crossroads” conference at the school.
John T. Hennessey-Niland, the SIIA’s director said this is a needed conference at this time.
“Syria’s always been a historic crossroads since Biblical times,“ he said. “It remains very, very important today.”
Hennessey-Niland, who is the former United States Ambassador to Palau, told KBTX the state of the country has shown progress since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last year.
“While we do hear a lot of the doom and gloom and the negativity, there are some signs of optimism that I think we need to grab onto,” added Hennessey-Niland.
The event will start at 12:45 p.m. with several breakout sessions, followed by the evening session at 5:30 p.m.
A keynote presentation will feature Mohammed Abdulrahman Turko, Syria’s Minister of Education, and Itamar Rabinovich, the former Israeli Ambassador to the United States.
