  1. I don’t see how teaching about the holocaust will prevent it happening again.

Are people going to be more willing to support interventions to prevent genocide? Doubt it.

Will they be more likely to oppose genocide at home? The is fuck all support for genocide and the people who support it study the holocaust as a guidebook.

  2. And the Jews (paid)papers tend to not know the other people that weren’t Jews and were killed too. Maybe were murders of first-class and second class but hey, you know what, there were humans not only Jews

  3. But then that means half of people DO know. And as an aside, they may not know the numbers, but they know it was a lot of people that succumbed.

  4. If i had a dollar for everytime i heard thag 6 million jews were killed i would be very rich.

Yes we get it jews were killed ! So was 10s of millions of people including huge percentages of whole countries.

What the fuck do you want ?

  5. This is needlessly inflammatory. Around half the people here don’t know the exact number – but I reckon they would guess 6-8 million.

  6. Don’t worry they are building a holocaust memorial right next to parliament just down the road from two other holocaust memorials and we all have to pretend that is normal

  7. Probably the same half thinks Britain singlehandedly won the war… that’s probably a much worse fact than this one (as horrific as it may be).

  8. This isnt a massive surprise. Huge gaps in peoples knowledge of history. Whats most disappointing is that as far as I am aware, its been in the curriculum for decades. I dont expect people to know about Holodomor, because it isn’t taught.

Popular culture and the general passing of time, have contributed to the lack of awareness.

    However, the headline is clickbait.

  9. A lot of people in Britain wouldn’t be able to tell you whether or not their own grandparent(s) and/or great grandparent(s) fought in WW2.

  10. I’m willing to bet that a hell of a lot fewer than half of Britons know that 3.5 million Ukrainians died during the Holodomor, or that 1 million Armenians were killed during the Armenian genocide, or that more than 0.5 million Tutsis were killed in the Rwandan genocide, or that…

Why is it always that the Holocaust is singled out when it comes to genocides?

  11. So what? Many people do not know the exact number of Jews killed in the Holocaust. But it doesn’t mean that they deny it ever occurred. BTW, in the similar survey in the United States last year, almost half of Americans couldn’t name a single concentration camp and believed that substantially fewer than 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust

  12. I’m not sure how accurate that is as it’s commonly taught in schools right?

What did surprise me was I found out recently that the Jewish population in the run up to the war was around half a million, dropping to about a quarter of a million by the start of the war.

The German population was about 70-80m depending on which areas you include.
