Take the Brexit bus after deal collapses: Brits living in Spain no longer allowed to drive since last weekend

  1. Que cachondos son, dice que Spain failed to reach an agreement. El día que algo sea culpa suya de acabará el mundo.

  2. *No longer allowed to use a British driving license after 6 months.

I’m allowed to drive in Spain.

  3. * Brits living in Spain who didn’t bother to exchange their UK license for a Spanish one despite repeated warnings.

  4. To be fair, it includes any Brit that has moved over since October 2021 who wouldn’t have been able to exchange as the system wasn’t working in the last quarter of the year and the system ended on 31st Dec.

So, for example, me. I was too late to come under the withdrawal agreement, I can move over any time being an EU citizen (Irish) but because my “infrastructure” (Driving licence, Healthcare) is all UK based, I’m shafted for this.

Weighing up if I actually ever need a car while in Spain. Your transport networks are pretty awesome.

And FWIW, I absolutely do not blame Spain for this. Sovereign country and all. And if they wanted to use it as leverage to try and get a deal out of Gibraltar, fair play. It’s not like the Brits wouldn’t leverage anything they had. People in the UK (and Brits in Spain) also have an inflated idea of how important the Brits are to Spain. Spain is a vast multicultural nation which is the favourite destination of heaps of Northern Europeans. Sure, this isn’t great (for me) but really the number of people it will affect is in the hundreds, not the thousands.

  5. The title of this is pure gammon bait.

You can’t drive in Spain, if you don’t have a Spanish license.

British immigrants had the option to swap their licence way back in 2020 as part of the withdrawal agreement. (Without a test!)

Anyone that didn’t bother their arse to swap TWO YEARS AGO is a fucking numbskull. Now you have to take a test to obtain one like any other 3rd country that isn’t part of the EU.

  6. In my opinion, this isn’t a bad thing. I moved to Australia and was only allowed to drive on my British license for a certain period of time before I had to get an Australian license. If you’re living in Spain, I think you should have a Spanish license.

  7. Time to make Britain feel what it’s like leaving EU and the kind of rights you lose by taking such decision.

  9. I am a Brit living in an eu land, I swapped out my licence before Brexit.
If you didnt then you either didnt know or you couldnt be arsed.

  10. They should have extended the 31 dec deadline by a few months as I know a few people who couldn’t get their nie in time because that was massively backed up, at least in my area.

  11. You can drive for 6 months on a UK licence and then have to take the Spanish test. How utterly ridiculous. Another diplomatic spat with regular people paying the price. Everyone shouting about brexit means bexit and Spain needs retired brits fuck off back to Facebook where you belong.
