I see [modern media](https://i.redditmedia.com/7VHUCYV6EC16jpKI9S8IfPrmjgfng2DbAo2NG0aPv_o.jpg?w=900&s=f4d1e7ca4137894eda53045f63da543a) still sometimes use the flag of the Second Spanish Republic, both [la tricolor](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/95/Flag_of_Spain_%281931_-_1939%29.svg/255px-Flag_of_Spain_%281931_-_1939%29.svg.png) and [la bandera militar](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7d/Flag_of_the_Second_Spanish_Republic_%28military%29.svg/158px-Flag_of_the_Second_Spanish_Republic_%28military%29.svg.png). In the US, there are (very different, I expect) connotations surrounding the Confederate flag. Obviously, the American Civil War was a very different conflict than the Spanish Civil War, so I would assume very different things about the intent behind using each of these flags. What connotations, political or otherwise, do these flags represent?

I apologize if my Spanish is awful. Thanks so much!

  1. For most people today that flag represent the spanish republicanism.
Only radical-right would be offended by that, but most of the right-republicanism wouldn’t be identified by that flag because of the history of the II Republic, so mostly of the people that use that flag are from the left political spectrum.

  2. It’s used as simbol **by leftists or antimonarchism movements**.

The second spanish republic was a democratic system that was abolished **by the army**, the result was a facist right-wing dictatorship. That explains some cultural things of spanish politics:

    – We do not have an appreciation for the army, because it’s seen as simbol of oppression and anti-democratic. Don’t forget we had a coup attempt in 1981 by conservatives sectors of the army.
    – The current flag is seen as a simbol of the dictatorship (althought it’s older). That’s explains why leftists prefers the second spanish’s republic flag and why you won’t see spanish flags in spain.
    – There is not a real right-wing movement in Spain.

  3. Many good replies already. I’d just like to add that it’s a pity that republicanism is so associated with the left to the point that you only see the tricolor. I’m sure that if I were to go to a republican demonstration with the [First Republic](http://i.imgur.com/M9ROahV.png) flag, many wouldn’t even know what flag it is or I’d even get booed!

Although I do think that many leftists are just for show and nowadays its like the trendy thing to be.

  4. I’d say all flags in Spain have some sort of political connotation. The use of the flag is not as normalised and “expected” as it is in the US, for instance.

The official red-yellow-red flag, when used by regular civilians not by political institutions, is often linked with right-wing nationalism at best and with Francoist ideals at worst. The Republican flag, although by itself it should only represent republicanism, it has come to be associated with left-wing ideologies, socialism and communism.

  5. I dont feel represented with the official Flag, I do with the Republic one. I can see other ppl explained you the main difference pretty well

  6. I personally don’t like it. In an hypotetical 3rd Republic (something that would please me a lot), I’d like if we kept our flag and redesign the Crest to look similar as it does now but without a crown.

That purple stripe is damn ugly, what does it even mean? The Spanish flag has been red – yellow – red for a long ass time, before fascism and republicanism. No need to change our flag as our political structure changes.

I’m a fan of our crest TBH, that’s why I would like to keep it, only removing the crown.
