After more than half a century, the oriental hornet has reappeared in Croatia.
The insect, once present in Croatia but absent from records since the 1970s, was recently spotted near Kaštela in a quarry outside Split.
Nediljko Landeka from the Institute of Public Health confirmed the sighting, noting that the species is reclaiming its old habitat,
“It is known that it was present before, but there has been no literature data since the 1970s, so it has retreated and is now returning to its old habitat. In the Split area, it was recorded around Kaštela in a quarry,” Landeka told Dnevnik Nova TV.
The oriental hornet is similar in size to the more familiar European hornet but is easily distinguished by its colour. It poses particular danger at this time of year when activity peaks and the likelihood of stings increases.
The species’ recent return to the region follows earlier sightings in Trieste, where it is believed to have arrived by ship. From there it spread into Slovenia before making its way into Dalmatia.
Experts are warning the public not to approach nests or attempt removal on their own.
Stings can trigger severe allergic reactions and, in extreme cases, can be fatal.
If stung, the recommended first steps are to wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, apply an antiseptic, and place a cold compress on the wound.
Medical assistance should be sought immediately if symptoms worsen.
The reappearance of the oriental hornet serves as a reminder of how species can resurface after decades, and why caution is vital when encountering them.
