Reduction in life expectancy in Europe from 2019-2020. Ireland did remarkably well in avoiding mass deaths from Covid.

  1. Life expectancy and number of deaths are two very different things. Covid may actually improve life expectancy in the population if it kills off the cohort of the population that is sick with other illnesses.

It’s true though that our excess mortality was very low for 2020 (the worst pandemic year). I think we only had ~1,000 excess deaths versus the five year average. Again, that might not be a surprise given the severity of lockdowns and that the majority of people who died were either very ill or very old and would have died anyway.
