  1. “A string of parcel bombings that rocked Europe last summer has been traced back to Estonia, according to Estonian security officials.  Authorities say two suspects were arrested this week in connection with the attacks, which investigators link to Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU.

The bombs were hidden inside massage pillows and shipped from Estonia, detonating in rapid succession across three countries. The first blast struck a DHL warehouse in Leipzig, Germany, early on July 20, 2024. The next day, another device exploded at a DPD depot near Warsaw, Poland, where four fire crews battled flames for two hours.

Three days later, a third parcel went off in a DHL facility in Birmingham, England, as a forklift moved containers. A fourth package, also rigged with a timer and incendiary materials, was intercepted by Polish security services before it could detonate.

Estonia’s Internal Security Service described the operation as one of the most brutal sabotage campaigns in Europe in recent years.”

  2. In July 2024, packages were sent from Narva, Estonia, to Riga, Latvia by an unknown person. In Latvia, a former Russian submarine commander, Aleksandr (has since died to cancer), contacted fellow submarine veteran Nikolai (who has since had stroke and lost the ability to speak). Nikolai then contacted his friend Andrei in St. Petersburg. Andrei reached out to another Russian, Vassili, in Riga whose son was his godchild. Vassili and his nephews, Roman and Vadim, organized transport of the packages from Riga to Vilnius.

In Vilnius the packages were handed to a former prisoner, a Ukrainian citizen named Vyatcheslav, nicknamed “Doughnut” who had spent five years in a Russian prison for rape (the article specifies that the victim was a woman). Doughnut’s assignment was to activate the bombs and leave them in an Airbnb. That is where the operation began to unravel: the man who was supposed to collect the bombs could not find the apartment. Doughnut was ordered to return and deactivate the devices.

Somehow the bombs subsequently ended up in Moldova. From there they were sent from Chișinău back to Riga by a shuttle bus. Again Vassili was asked to transport the packages to Vilnius, but he had been in a motorcycle accident. Andrei in St. Petersburg then contacted another former submariner he had served with, this man sent his stepson to collect the packages from the shuttle bus and gave the package to Vassili. Vassili, together with his nephews Roman and Vadim, transported the bombs from Riga to Vilnius once more.

In Vilnius they gave the packages to a man driving a Lexus. That man left the packages in a garage, where they were picked up by a Ukrainian citizen, Vladyslav. Vladyslav activated the bombs and split them into four packages. Each parcel contained explosives hidden inside massage pillows, body-lotion bottles filled with nitromethane, and some sex toys. Vladyslav left the packages in a hotel room; someone picked them up and passed them to a Lithuanian citizen, Aleksandras, who posted the packages under a false name. Two to the UK and two to Poland. The packages later exploded in warehouses.

The operation was coordinated via Telegram by a Russian citizen named Jaroslav, a criminal who worked for the GRU; he relayed orders from the GRU to the people organizing transport of the bombs.
