WARSAW, November 11 – RIA Novosti. Turkish Airlines will not allow citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen on flights to Minsk due to the migration crisis, said the spokesman for the office of the President of Poland, Jakub Kumoh.
“Turkish Airlines has confirmed that it will no longer accept on board planes to Minsk citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen – with the exception of holders of diplomatic passports,” he wrote on Twitter.
As Bloomberg reported earlier, due to the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, sanctions may be imposed against the Russian Aeroflot and the Turkish carrier Turkish Airlines. Both airlines have denied accusations of involvement in the transportation of illegal immigrants.
In turn, Acting German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stressed that the EU intends to expand sanctions against Minsk, as well as all individuals and companies involved in the transportation of illegal migrants to Belarus. We are also talking about sectoral sanctions, he added. In this case, restrictions will hit the entire Union State.
In response, Russia said that it was not surprised by the reaction of the European Union, which always boils down to “mindlessly waving a sanction baton.” In addition, the Foreign Ministry promised to “lend a shoulder” to Minsk in case of new restrictions on the part of Brussels.
The situation with migrants
In the summer, on the border of Belarus and Poland, as well as Belarus and the Baltic countries, the flow of refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to break through to Western Europe increased.
The situation escalated on November 8, when about two thousand people gathered at the barrage wire. Polish security forces thwarted several attempts to break through, including with the use of tear gas. Illegals set up a spontaneous camp.
Lithuania, Latvia and Poland blame Belarusians for what is happening, Minsk denies all accusations. Lukashenka said that the country will no longer restrain the flow of people: because of the West’s sanctions, there is “neither money nor energy for this.”
Actions speak louder than words do. Consider threatening them and bam they stop on their own. Now start talking about the other airliners and if they don’t start doing things on their own ban them from eu airspace.
They will still travel on fake documentation anyway. The Turkish authorities are unlikely to scrutinise the paperwork of unwanted refugees too closely.
Even if the EU succeeds in stopping all migrants and refugees from flying directly to Minsk, won’t they just go to Moscow (or any other Russian ariport) instead and then get on a connecting flight to Minsk?
Where are all the intellectuals of yesterday, “uncovering” super secret turkish plot to undermine glorious EU. It was business as usual. And now it’s also business as usual.
Cant wait for Erdogan to leave in 2023 really. EU used this corrupt Pontic Georgian to turn Turkey into refugee depot, completely fuck up its demographics and economy with 8 million refugees. On top of this EU managed to create the image that Turkey is still the bad guy here while looking after 8 million refugees (to protect EU so that Erdogan remains in power) Once the Kemalists back in power in 2023 not single one of them will remain in Turkey. Maybe EU can kill them on the borders and sea, Turks no longer will be the serfs for EU.
Crazy how many turks are defending human trafficking in the comments, I would have not expected this in a million years.
EU pressure working?
Just a small scent of EU pressure and they backed down. Feels good man.
They will do as some do now: fly to moscow, take flight or drive from moscow to minsk, then try crossing to europe.
The EU should actually ban all airlines that service flights to Belarus from EU airspace. Let’s see which places airlines prefer to keep.
looking at the comments i see you feel very strong by making a company choose the bigger market over a small market but still you cant do shit to russia and belarus. sheeps
It doesn’t feel quite right to deny service based on citizenship. And there must be a valid argument for a company to defend such a decision. After all, travel ban comes not from departure or destination country regulations and it affects citizens of third countries.
I hope this is a temporary measure. It would’ve been better in this case if those flights were cancelled altogether. Which would massively affect other passengers as well, but also bring more attention to the problem rather than silent restrictions. If you take any measures then don’t just half-ass them when it comes about humanitarian crisis.
Hopefully this will reduce the scale of the problem. If this is gonna happen at all – we’ve heard from Polish official, not from the company themselves. Meanwhile, I really hope that EU would stop talking about sanctions and introduce new ones.
And I don’t think complete border shutdown, including air travel ban to/from Belarus, is a good idea. I don’t know what is the situation now, but from what I’ve been told last year flights were pretty much the only way to leave/escape the country.
Next step: Turkey will be blamed for allowing other airlines to use its airports.
I hope they let David fly from Minsk for Christmas.
nothing will change except turkish air lines won’t do any profit from flying minsk. some other airlines will carry refugees…
Hi selfishness breeding-ground-for-alt-right-extremistic-hypocrites with subpar humanity rights and worldview r/europe sub redditors!
Somehow someway bird country bad again! well well well, i guess it’s just the usual then.
what if “any airline that wants to fly to EU, shall stop flying to Belarus”
End of august I encountered a group of middle eastern men with Egyptian, Algerian and Syrian passports having trouble going through the passport checks in Istanbul and wondered why they would go to Belarus with an interpreter. Not judging but they didn’t carry themselves as types that are up for an Eastern European tour. Now it makes sense, jeez.
There was some problems on their paperwork and the Turkish police let them go, I speak Turkish and the police were like (among themselves) let them be the problem of Belorussians who gave them these visas.
I see blaming Turkey is a sport in Europe now. 10 points, gj.
