  20. This is poverty porn. Northern Ireland has some of the poorest regions in Western Europe and is starved of funding. There is an education crisis amongst working class young men particularly from Protestant communities and a devastating suicide rate. It’s no coincidence that sentiment like this is growing in unserved, poor communities where migrants in bad circumstances themselves are placed. These protests are not happening in middle class communities. If people see us as a post conflict country struggling to find its footing without the resources needed then that’s exactly what we are

  24. I think the reporter’s tone comes across as a bit smug, as if she already knows better. Some of the comments here feel the same way.

    That approach rarely changes minds, it usually just entrenches people further in their views.

    The reality is that people in Ballymena aren’t protesting for no reason. They’ve had experiences that shaped their opinions, and while we might not agree with them, dismissing those concerns outright won’t help. It’s also true that there are cases of illegal activity involving immigrants in Northern Ireland. That points to government failings, and the local community is the one left dealing with the consequences.

    Vilifying people or writing them off as ignorant doesn’t solve the problem. Trying to understand why they feel the way they do is more likely to lead to a constructive response.
