LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan Attorney General announced a preliminary victory in court over the use of SNAP information by immigration enforcement.
AG Nessel was part of a coalition of 20 other attorneys general and State of Kentucky.
The coalition filed a lawsuit to prevent the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) information by immigration enforcement officials.
The legal coalition says the information, which includes sensitive data like home addresses and social security numbers, would be used by immigration officials illegally.
“By trying to illegally seize the personal data of more than a million Michigan residents, the Trump Administration attempted to force families into choosing between protecting their personal identifying information that may be shared for any purpose and eating,” Nessel said. “I am relieved the Court recognized the danger this posed, and I will continue to fight to ensure Michigan families never have to sacrifice their privacy to put food on the table.”
Existing federal and state laws already prevent the government from disclosing SNAP recipients’ information other than “narrow circumstances.”
Non-citizens cannot receive SNAP benefits. Non-citizens can apply for SNAP benefits on behalf of their citizenship-holding children.
