Police arrested a man over the weekend on suspicion of entering a family home in Hafnarfjörður and assaulting a child, reports RÚV. The man was released from custody yesterday.

According to RÚV, in the early hours of Sunday, September 14, the man entered the family’s home at night and assaulted a child of primary school age. There are ties between the child’s parents and the man, but they are not family-related.

Police have refrained from commenting on the case but view it as very serious and they emphasise that the investigation is a priority.

A request for custody was made, and a judge at the Reykjanes District Court approved a short period of detention on the basis of investigative interests. The man was released yesterday.

RÚV reports that there is some dissatisfaction among police officers regarding the suspect’s release. Recently, the Court of Appeal rejected a police request in another case concerning sexual abuse of a child, a decision which also caused discontent among the police.
