Albania unveils AI-generated ‘minister’ • FRANCE 24 English

Uproar in Albania’s parliament. Opposition politicians block the lectturn, hurl papers, and hurl their disapproval. Insulted that an artificial intelligence should be appointed to the cabinet. Prime Minister Eddie Rama defended his decision. It’s a vetigenous promotion for the AI called Della. Earlier this year, she was rolled out on a public service website as a virtual assistant. Now she’s a full-blown government minister tasked with making corruption-free decisions on public tenders. The opposition accuses her of being unconstitutional since she’s not a real Albanian. It’s true that I do not have citizenship, but nor do I have any personal ambition or interests. I only have data, a thirst for knowledge and algorithms dedicated to serving citizens impartially, transparently, and tirelessly. Rama has just begun his fourth term as prime minister and has made it his central mission to get Albania into the EU. AI has been deployed to process the enormous amount of paperwork required and introduced across Albanian society in procurement, tax, road safety, and policing, all in an effort to meet EU standards. Critics warned that without proper oversight, AI could easily be exploited or abused, potentially making Albania’s long-running corruption issues worse.

An AI-generated government “minister” made its debut with an address in the Albanian parliament on Thursday (September 18), with Prime Minister Edi Rama presenting the bot as a symbol of his government’s push for transparency and innovation. Opposition lawmakers banged their hands on their tables, pushing the speaker to cut short the debate on the government program.

  9. well this is one way of fighting corruption. It can't "accidentally" fall of a balkony after taking a decision against the interests of some powerful ppl.

  19. Imagine not having even one fair and uncorrupted minister,which leads you to put an AI minister to do the job of what other ministers should be doing.They are being paid by civillians taxes to do their job and still they think an AI does the job better…
