Hello, I’m planning to travel from Brussels Noord station to Basel SBB station in DB train.
On the seat selection page I can see that the Köln to Basel part of the journey shows “Seats selected automatically”. Does this mean the seats will actually get selected automatically or is it just “train reservation” and doesn’t guarantee a seat?
Also, what does IC 60403 / NJ 403 mean? Same train with but with 2 numbers 🤔?

Indeed this.

In this instance, two trains are joined together and travel as one at least for a portion of the route. NJ 403 is the sleeper train, IC 60403 is the seated train.

Yes, like codesharing on planes. It is a night sleeper train with some additional regular inter-city carriages (with regular seats) attached to it.
Automatically selected and this train is infact not a Deutsche Bahn Train…
It is operated by Austrian State Railways ÖBB
That is why it operates as NJ and IC as it is a Nightjet
Don’t bother booking a seat in the IC60403/5 if you’re in the IC section. It runs pretty much empty.
Source: Did a number on my back taking that train 3 times.
