I was foraging and saw this huge mushroom attached to a tree. Is this an oyster mushroom?

  1. Whichever mushroom it is, **never ever pick a mushroom you personally can’t identify.** Randoms making guesses without all the necessary information is not enough, and it’s how people end up needing liver transplants – or funerals.

  2. Stay away from any mushroom that you yourself can’t reliably identify as edible. Asking random people on the Internet is not a substitute – and neither is asking an AI!

  3. It looks like **osterivinokas** byt i’m not fungus expert by any means.

  4. Stay away from mushroomz you dont know! Let them Be. Or take a some shroom Bible with you. Or use internet. WTF?

  5. I don’t think it is an oyster mushroom, There are many similar looking mushrooms out there, growing from rotten wood. Oysten mushroom would have more of a curve on the edges, and deeper cup on top of the hat. You can try an AI app called Seek, which is free, to get you started, but always cross check with any similar looking species until you are 100% sure. Luontoportti is a good Finnish site, but only in Finnish I think.

The best way to get into foraging is to start with someone who has more skill and can teach you the basics, until you can start to identify new species yourself. I’m now about five years in and have tried to add 3 species every year. Slow and steady wins the race. This year I took on mustavahakas, suomumustesieni and tuhtihaarakas.
