In a rebuke of the Trump Administration’s growing immigration enforcement actions, Governor Newsom joined state and community leaders in Los Angeles, Saturday, for a bill signing ceremony.

“I am very proud of California pushing back on the authoritarianism of this administration,” the Governor said.

The new laws are intended to protect vulnerable populations, particularly those in schools and hospitals. That includes almost 11 million Californians who are foreign born.

The five bills signed are:

AB 49 Prohibits immigration enforcement officers from entering a school site without a judicial warrant.

SB 81 Prohibits immigration enforcement officers from entering non-public patient areas of a health or care facility without a warrant.

SB 98 Requires schools and higher education institutions to notify their communities when federal immigration enforcement is on campus and bans officers from entering certain areas without a warrant.

SB 627 Bans federal and local law enforcement officers from wearing masks while performing their duties, with some exceptions.

SB 805 Requires law enforcement officers to identify themselves and provide contact information upon request while on duty.

People line up every Saturday for the food giveaway at Chollas View United Methodist Church. The congregation has a large Haitian, Asian, and Mexican immigrant population.

“Usually we see almost 250 people line up here looking for food. We think (the large group) is going to attract ICE and (agents) will come and harass people, but we haven’t had that yet,” said Mordi Iheme, a church trustee who runs the event with his wife. They immigrated from Nigeria.

There were also legal citizens in line. One man who agreed to be interviewed did not want to be identified because he said there are ongoing threats by federal immigration agents.

“I’ve seen people hassled by these agents called ICE. They have even hassled my own kind. I’m Puerto Rican born in Chicago, Illinois. I’ve got a passport and everything,” he told NBC 7.
