Whilst it may not be a huge deal, we thought it was good to see that the Santa Fe Minerals Limited (ASX:SFM) Non-Executive Chairman of the Board, Mark Jones, recently bought AU$100k worth of stock, for AU$0.05 per share. While we’re hesitant to get too excited about a purchase of that size, we do note it increased their holding by a solid 25%.
Notably, that recent purchase by Mark Jones is the biggest insider purchase of Santa Fe Minerals shares that we’ve seen in the last year. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (AU$0.25), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn’t tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Santa Fe Minerals insiders own 34% of the company, worth about AU$8.3m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it’s enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
It is good to see recent purchasing. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Insiders likely see value in Santa Fe Minerals shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company).
