2. This post is only 23 minutes old at the time of writing and the comments are already wild. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry at how some members of the UK public defend the British flag as if it is their favourite child.

3. This should not be a controversial opinion but sadly I feel it will be with the state of current public discourse.

5. Thr people doing this often have past histories of violence, which says it all really. They want to intimidate people generally and immigrants are just another target for them. You cannot just threaten and hit problems away, you need a plan that actually works, however this sort of person lacks the reasoning skills to come up with a workable immigration policy.

6. I’d agree, symbols meaning can change depending on how they’re used and it doesn’t matter what they once meant (see Swastika). Do people want the England flag to become a symbol of hatred?

   You’re at a garden centre on a Sunday, the sun is out, they have a Union Jack or St George’s flag outside – not intimidating to anyone

   You’re walking down the street as literally any POC (remember when it used to be “boat people”) and some angry racist draped in a tattered St George’s flag screams at you to fuck off back to your own country (no matter you’re third generation British, just unfortunately not the right shade for these people)

   I mean I’ve tried to be simple but there is a difference.  It ain’t the flag, it’s the intent.  If that complicated for you I don’t k ow how to help you further, sorry you can’t see the difference I guess.

9. I know it’s not quite the same (yet), but remember the swastika was once a symbol for well-being in Hinduism and Buddhism. Now it is more commonly associated with hate and fascism! Let’s hope our flag doesn’t become seen in a negative way because of some brainless thugs.

11. There was a woman on Radio 4 this morning who made a great comment ( I think she was the bishop of Dover?).

    She said the St.Georges flag used at the far-right rally last week and spray painted on roundabouts isn’t the English flag. The English flag is one of tolerance and acceptance, as well as many other English values. The St.Georges flag used is the St.Georges flag of the crusades, of bigotry and religious warfare.

12. It was expected to happen when people start to call Union Jack and St George’s flags “Racist”.

    Angry people are reactionary, When you call something innocent as hates symbol, hateful people will start to use it to spite.

13. I’m surprised how many people I know are openly expressing how much they don’t like immigrants. Like my co-workers, partner, relatives.

    I’m a minority and once people start to do this, we will certainly be next. I don’t join in because of that, I don’t join in because I genuinely don’t have a problem with migrants.

14. It’s taken nearly a month for anyone to come and speak out against these flag shagging nationalists. It should have been condemned by the acting government weeks ago. But Starmer merely said that he supports flag waving and that he has his own flags at home. Councils across Britain should have taken down the flags the first week. But flags are still up in many areas. Disgraceful and cowardly.

    At first I thought the flags being raised was quite nice, and that normal people were reclaiming it, but then the fuck witts jumped on the bandwaggon like they always do and sullied it.

    Like that cretin climbing in the shop roofs and spraying crosses on the front of people’s flats before racially abusing passers by. Also that guy who has painted his house like a union jack. If that was only e of my neighbours I wouldn’t be very happy because it looks tacky as fuck.

18. The weird amount of flag shagging people are doing recently all feels very American to be honest.

    Reform will have a “pledge of allegiance in all schools” manifesto pledge soon.
