The Day Bombers Dropped Food Instead of Bombs

They knew the war was over. It ended May 8th. The people were starving to death. Eisenhower and Churchill said, “We have to do something.” B7s and English Lancaster bombers put in plywood floors in the Bombay. We loaded them with Krations food. Instead of flying at 20 to 25,000 ft, we came in at 200 ft. Can you imagine how loud the Germans agreed not to fire on us? When I hit the coast, I waved and the German waved back to me. They said some of the Germans had just pistols and they were firing them. I don’t know. But when we came in there and dropped the food on the rooftops, they had, “God bless you boys. Thank you.” It was a beautiful way to end the war.

At the end of World War II, with the war officially over on May 8th, millions in Europe were starving. In a rare act of compassion, American B-17s and British Lancaster bombers replaced bombs with food. Flying dangerously low at just 200 feet, crews risked their lives to drop rations to the desperate people below. German soldiers agreed not to fire — some even waved as the planes passed. As food rained down, civilians shouted messages of gratitude: “God bless you boys. Thank you.

  1. You all do realize that these men you all refer to as "The Greatest Generation" (BTW, I agree), almost to a man, were disciplined by having their butts busted. Also, zero school shootings.

  11. "A beautiful way to end the war"? Especially after the bombing of civilians in German cities like Dresden, for example. You're all mad.

  12. After WW2 when Berlin was cut off by the soviet troops (railway and roads were closed) the Americans and British forces also helped getting food to west and east Berlin. In German these carrier and bomber planes are called "Rosinenbomber" which translates to "Raisinbomber" 🙂
