  1. SS:

Britain has formally recognised the State of Palestine after Israel failed to meet conditions including a ceasefire in Gaza, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying the move was aimed at reviving hopes for a two-state solution; the decision, taken alongside Canada and Australia and expected to be followed by others at the UN, carries strong symbolic weight given the UK’s historic role in the region, has drawn praise from Palestinian officials as “long-overdue,” sparked mixed reactions among Britons, and provoked anger from Israel and the United States, while potential consequences include upgrading the Palestinian mission in London to an embassy and banning goods from Israeli settlements.

  2. I believe the recognition is based on the 1967 borders.

  3. These Western countries are pathetic. LOL. Giving Israel an ultimatum for a ceasefire while Hamas still hold hostages.

  4. There’s such a thing as cause and effect. Had Hamas not launched this war, the subsequent recognitions of Palestine would not have occurred. Or at least not as quickly as they have. Hamas’s war is a direct catalyst for the recognition. How is that not a reward to Hamas?

From a Palestinian point of view, on October 6 they did not have widespread statehood recognition. Now as a result of Hamas’s efforts, more recognition exists. So why not support Hamas, which has objectively increased their geopolitical standing? And in exchange for zero concessions?

    Terrible idea, woefully premature.

  5. Recognition is toothless appeasement of a domestic audience only. There’s nothing here that holds long-term consequence. Tell me when they do something that can’t be diplomatically walked-back. Right now the UK has only partially suspended their arms trade with Israeli. Is that permanent, or fully canceled? Call me when that happens. Then I’ll know you’re serious.

  6. Israel will probably react to all these new recognitions by annexing the whole West Bank and perhaps doing another controversial strike abroad.

That may be enough to get Germany and Czechia to drop their opposition to EU sanctions and the UK would sanction Israel in this scenario. The US would be outraged and sanction its European allies for daring to sanction Israel.

Overall, the Euro-Atlantic alliance weakens over this dispute in the Middle East.
