London City Airport has launched a direct two-hour flight to one of the prettiest Christmas markets in Europe. The British Airways route from the East London airport to Innsbruck in Austria will return from December 1 offering an easy route to the sought-after winter destination.

The historic city is incredible visit all year round with its historic architecture and stunning views, but Innsbruck transforms into a winter wonderland during the cooler months. Snow covers the surrounding mountain tops while warm lights and decorations make the ‘alpine city’ come alive.

Putting our winter equivalents to shame in the UK, Innsbruck and its surrounding areas offer seven different markets to explore – all with their own unique history and charm. The best-known is one hosted in its historic old town.

Colourful market stalls are nestled between medieval buildings. Here you can scamper for Christmas tree decorations, drafts and souvenirs while brass bands play traditional music from the Golden Roof.

The nearby market in Maria Theresien Street offers more of the same with a modern twist, while the Marktplatz by the River Inn is perfect for children with puppet shows and storytelling. You can also browse 60 stalls here and ride the traditional carousel.

Other options include Hungerburg which offers the best views of wintery Innsbruck and St. Nikolaus for a more tranquil experience. American magazine Travel + Leisure says it has the “most festive Christmas markets in Europe”, adding it’s also one of the key locations where you can expect snow, with a 46 per cent chance of a snow day in November and December.

British Airways launches 11-times-per-week flights to Madrid from London City Airport

British Airways has also launched an 11-times-per-week connections to Madrid for a different winter experience. Temperatures can reach 15C here during the cooler months and it’s mostly dry.

This is a marked difference from London and the UK during winter. British Airways is also bringing back routes to popular ski connections Geneva and Chambery from December 1.

Andrew Hodges, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport, said: “We’re excited to expand our winter schedule with British Airways, offering even more options for passengers seeking city escapes, ski adventures, or winter sun.

“The launch of Madrid and return of popular ski routes are a clear response to growing demand for leisure travel from London City. With existing capacity available, we’re actively in discussions with both new and existing airlines to broaden our network and unlock more destinations for our passengers.”
