Translated: US will defend Poland and Baltics against Russia, says Trump

The United States will help defend Poland and the Baltic countries if Russia escalates.

This was the response of US President Donald Trump when he was asked by reporters in front of the White House on Sunday whether he would defend the countries if they were attacked by Russia.

The announcement comes after three Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace on Friday. Russia denies the incident, but Estonia subsequently asked to activate NATO's Article 4, which allows allies to put security issues on the agenda of the North Atlantic Council.

The members of the UN Security Council have been called to an emergency meeting on Monday about the incident.
