Strætó buses will be free of charge across the capital region and the countryside today, September 22, in celebration of Car-Free Day, part of European Mobility Week.

“Car-Free Day is a great opportunity to leave the car at home and try other ways of getting around,” Strætó said in a statement. The initiative encourages people to explore more sustainable transport options, whether by bus, bike, on foot, or even jogging to work or school.

The bus company invites everyone to take part. “We want people to enjoy travelling in an environmentally friendly and affordable way,” Strætó added.

According to the City of Reykjavík’s 2024 mobility survey, 22% of adult residents in the city use active transportation. When asked how they wished to get around, almost 50% of respondents claimed they wanted to transit via bus, bicycle, or on foot.
