>The changes put forward would oblige VoDs to protect audiences from harmful or offensive material
How vague. I wonder what will fall under “harmful” or “offensive”.
Here’s a novel idea: if something upsets you just stop watching it
“Think of the children” is one of the classic authoritarian wedges to introduce more authoritarianism
They talk about not introducing a smacking ban because parents should be free to parent how they see fit, yet they are happy to police what children can watch
I generally think it’s good that streaming services will be subjected to the same rules as TV broadcasters. Whether the rules make sense is a whole different issue.
Nanny state interfering with the freedom of choice sounds a bit like what everyone is seeing in Russia
In a perfect world this means conspiracy theories, fake medicines and so on can’t be presented as true.
In reality it will probably be anything the government doesn’t like.
It would take someone of consummate talent and unimpeachable integrity overseeing this for me think it could be a good thing. We’ve got Nadine ‘Downstream your tennis pitch’ Dorries.
The whole point of streaming services was to get away from nanny knows better…
