The PN said that it welcomes the Maltese Government’s decision to recognise the State of Palestine, “even if this should have happened long ago.”

“The PN had long been pressing the Government to do this, and maintains that the Government ought to have recognised the Palestinian State much earlier, in line with Malta’s longstanding commitment to justice, peace, and international law.”

“The Government kept stalling on this important issue, and the decision to recognise the Palestinian State this evening is nothing more than a recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to sovereignty.”

The PN “reiterates its firm conviction that the only path to a just and lasting peace in the region is the two-state solution, ensuring the security and sovereignty of both Israel and Palestine.”

It said it expects Robert Abela to now take a clear, courageous, unequivocal, principled position on the proposed sanctions and the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, in the face of the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The PN statement was signed by Beppe Fenech Adami, Shadow Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, and Trade and Beppe Galea, PN International Secretary
